37 - The Math Puzzle › Why 37?
Why 37?
Ask a room full of people to name a random number between 1 and 100, and far more of them say 37 than chance would predict. It is the number humans reach for when they are trying not to be predictable, which is a delightful contradiction, and it is why we named a game after it.
The most popular "random" number
The science channel Veritasium ran a survey of roughly 200,000 people, asking them to pick a random number between 1 and 100. The numbers that came back most often were 7, 73, 77 and 37. Then they asked people to pick the number they thought fewest others would choose. The winners there were 73 and 37, almost tied.
Read that twice. People pick 37 because it feels obscure, and so does everybody else.
Why our brains like it
It is a prime, so it does not show up in times tables and does not feel manufactured. It is odd. It is not near the edges. It is not a tidy multiple of five or ten. Every instinct we have about what randomness should look like points at numbers exactly like 37.
Real randomness is flat, and every number has an equal shot. Human randomness is lumpy and has favourites. Magicians have known this for years and use it in a trick called the 37 Force.
Some genuinely fun 37 facts
- Multiply it by 3 and you get 111. By 33 you get 1221. By 333 you get 12321. The palindromes keep coming.
- If a three-digit number divides by 37, so do its rotations. 148 works, and so do 481 and 814.
- The smallest magic square built from primes and 1 has 37 sitting in the middle.
- There is a decision-making guideline called the 37% rule: look at the first 37% of your options, then take the next one that beats everything you have seen.
So why build a game around it?
Because it is reachable but never obvious. With seven dice and the usual operations there are normally several routes to 37, and almost never a route you spot instantly. Pick a round number like 50 and the puzzle gets boring fast. Pick something enormous and it gets tedious. 37 sits in the sweet spot, the same way it sits in the sweet spot of our intuition.
Fair warning: once you notice 37, you will start seeing it everywhere.
